Command X – Pancake & Sausage on a Stick

This week we watched the second part of Command 7 – the five finalists. The designers had to put together a new design for the product pancake & sausage on a stick. After revealing the five different designs two contestants were eliminated. I agree with their decisions as to who was eliminated. The first contestant lacked design and creativity and the last contestant referenced something that has been used quite a bit. These two designs both had no wow factor and the designs wouldn’t have made me want to pick up the package. The other three designs were carefully thought out. They had fun with the package and made you want to look at all the little details. Here are the three best designs:

Think Differently Journal Entry 10 – USA vs. Brazil

Last week the women’s FIFA USA vs. Brazil’s match was on. Normally I would support Brazil as they are a good, strong team and the US, well I didn’t think they’d have a chance. During the game Brazil was in the lead. The US had a man down and were playing very well. Brazil was trying to cheat their way to the next match by wasting time and pretending injuries. At that time I wanted the US to win. It’s funny how sometimes your opinions can change so suddenly. At the end of the game the US scored during the last few minutes and ended up winning in shootouts. Since they played so well, I hope for them to make it to the finals J

Think Differently Journal Entry 9 – Cruising Along

This past weekend a friend wanted to surprise me and took me on a boat cruise around Toronto Island. If only he knew I get sea sick from the rocking of the boat. Since he made an effort I thought I'd be a sport and just go with the flow. At first it was horrible. I started feeling woozy since the boat was still at the dock and tipping side to side. Once the boat took off I was much better. It was nice to get out and try something new. I learned that even if I’ve had a bad experience before, it doesn’t mean it’s going to be the same experience the second time around.

Command X – Denver Broncos logo

Out of the 7 contestants the logo’s I liked best were  Elaine Cherov’s

And Matthew Munoz.

Elaine took a risk and decided to stick with the original logo and proceed to use the existing logo and to build off of that with a little change. I believe the original logo worked well; why change a good thing. She made the logo more modern. Personally I like simplistic and Elaine’s logo was easy to read and is something I will remember.

Matthew’s logo again was simplistic, maybe a little too simplistic and could have been taken further. Overall you saw an image of the horse emerging from the ‘D’ and it was something you would remember.

I felt the other contestants logo’s were too busy.

Project 5 – Design is…

I choose to be a designer because I am fascinated with the different types of design fields, especially interior design and graphic design. I enjoy the creative aspect and love the great feeling you get when a project has been completed successfully.

Design is about anything and everything. Design is what you want it to be and can be found anywhere. There will always be a concept or will convey some sort of message.

Design is important because it causes discussion. Whether it's good or bad it will draw attention. Design is seen everywhere and from one design another can be inspired.

Design is created by you, me, everyone.

When I design I feel inspired to design something else. Every design is different and when I design I learn new information about that topic. I’m constantly learning and it sometimes takes my mind off of anything that may be bugging me. It’s fun, relaxing (when I don’t have 20 projects running) and it gets me thinking.

When I experience good design I let other people become aware of it. I become inspired and take note of it. I refer to these designs in the future for reference.

Design is a process. Designs always start somewhere and develops over a period of time.

Favourite Designer – Marian Bantjes

Marian Bantjes is a designer, typographer, writer and illustrator. I first learned of Marian through a typography class and after seeing examples of her work I become inspired and absolutely loved how detailed and how precise she is with her work. Marian is important as she takes care in her work. She asks herself questions and wonders how to make something better. She strives for the best.
It's great to see how she appreciates detail and will work hard to make sure that everything is perfect.

Among her international clients, she counts Saks Fifth Avenue, Penguin Books, GRANTA, Wallpaper*, The Guardian, WIRED, Stefan Sagmeister, Winterhouse (Bill Drenttel & Jessica Helfand), Maharam, Ogilvy & Mather Chicago, Young & Rubicam Chicago, Random House, Houghton Mifflin, Print Magazine, GQ Italia, and The New York Times, among others from Europe, Australia and South America.
